When I travel, even if I am just going for a walk down the road from my house, I try to take my camera. You never know what might pop up that is photo worthy. Even driving I find that I often wish for my camera. You can ask my children about family vacations. I used to annoy them by pulling over on the side of the road to take a pictures of scenic areas numerous times during a trip. I got used to the “Not again!” comments coming from the back seat.
If I am a passenger on a trip I take pictures as we are moving. These photos will not be worth showing others, but they can be really beneficial when needing reference material for a painting or a drawing. I use my cell phone camera quite often in the car. You would be amazed at the quality of pictures taken with the phone. Technology keeps getting better and better. The great thing about the cell phone camera is that it is really easy to carry. So when I hike and don’t want to lug around a large camera I stick my phone in my pants pocket.
I just recently visited family in Northeastern Oregon near Hell’s Canyon. We spent one day driving around the area seeing the sights. I took pictures out the back seat window. There was so much to photograph, but if we stopped everytime I saw something I was intrigued by we would never get anywhere. I didn’t want to be a pain and ask to stop twenty times in a couple of hours so I had to really look and decide what pictures I couldn’t live without. It was hard making that decision.
One shot I couldn’t pass up was when I saw two bald eagles sitting in a tree not too far off the road. We stopped and I used my telephoto lens. I only have a 200 power on the telephoto so I was not able to get very close. But, I took the pictures anyway. The quality setting of the camera was set to the highest quality possible. I knew that if I cropped the photos I might get something worthwhile.
I have placed the original photo and then the cropped picture in this article. I hope that you like them.
When you are traveling you may not have a chance to do much creatively. Taking photographs can give your creativity a lift. I really enjoy looking at all the pictures I have taken and remembering all the places I have been with family and friends. Often when I look at old photos I find a new subject for a painting or drawing. With photo editing software I can fix lighting and composition issues as well. Many times a picture that I had no interest in originally will turn out to be one I fall in love with later.
Travel and photography go together…….. Hope you have a great day. Don’t forget your camera!
