The first rule of focus is this: “Wherever you are, be there.” Unknown Author
Are you ever at an activity, a dinner party or a business meeting, but you aren’t really there? You might be deep in thought about something else you need to be doing or thinking about something that happened a week ago. To me this photograph illustrates the quote above perfectly. “Wherever you are, be there.” Be present. In the photograph the cone flowers are clearly in focus, they represent the here and now. The blurred background of mountain and field represent either the future or the past.
It is easy to fall victim to thoughts of the past or worries of the future. This is especially true when you are out of your element. Since moving to Oregon, I find myself starting to worry about things. My possessions are on a barge on the Pacific Ocean along with my vehicle. We don’t have a place of our own yet. We are living with my husband’s daughter, son-in-law and wonderful grandchildren until we can find a place. They have graciously extended their hospitality to use. So, all is good. But, still I sometimes find myself going off to the future or back to the past.
I know better. All I have to do is pick up the Bible and find comforting scripture. I know God is with me. I need to keep that focus. I need to be present at all times. When I am present I can enjoy the beauty and smell of flowers around me. I can taste the food I am eating. I can feel the breeze blow across my skin.
My goal for today is to stay in the present. I know it is all about developing habits. I know that staying in the now will also help me in my creativity. Staying in the now will let me enjoy the creating instead of worrying about what I am going to create next. I challenge each of my readers to focus on right here, right now. I know we will all be happier for trying.
Sometimes we worry and fret about things from the past or the future. I pray today that you will allow me to let go of things from the past that are upsetting or that I regret. Bring only memories to mind that are helpful and will make me a better person. I also ask that you allow me to trust my intuition as I go through the day. Let me be cognizant of the feelings and thoughts I am experiencing. Help me to stay focused on the day, the environment around me, the sounds, the taste, the smell. Help me to keep my thoughts on today, not tomorrow. Bless my efforts to please you today in my creativity.
I ask all in Your Holy Son’s name. Amen.
