Creativity Devotional – Perceiving a Somewhat Different World

“If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world.”

~ Ludwig Wittgenstein

What would the world be like if we all spoke the same language?  Would there be peace on Earth?  Would we see the world in a different way if we spoke Spanish instead of English or Thai instead of Japanese? According to “to perceive” means:

  1. To become aware of directly through any of the senses, especially sight or hearing.
  2. To achieve understanding of; apprehend.

Do we ever actually perceive the world? In order to perceive we have to slow down.  To perceive we need to pause, to listen, to smell, to taste, to look, or touch.  How often have you eaten a meal and not tasted it? Have you missed a beautiful sunset because you didn’t take the time to look. Do you stop and smell the roses blooming in your yard?

As artists and creative people we do speak a different language. We speak the “universal language” which need no translation. Today, let’s use that language.  Take some time to really perceive the world. Then share your perceptions  by creating. Have a great creative day!

God, Our Father,

Thank you for another wonderful day to live on this planet.  Thank you for our senses, so that we can truly experience the world around us.  Help us to be more perceptive, to see the world in a way that others may not. As we work to create for your glory, give us guidance. Help us to share our perceptions, to speak through our artwork so that others will see our love for You.  Bless us always. In Christ’s name. Amen.
