Creativity Devotional – Doing Something Different

Doing Something Different

When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.

~ George Washington Carver

I ran across a bracelet I had been making three years ago. It was stuck in a box with a bunch of jewelry-making supplies, a sort of lost treasure. I remember working on this bracelet and liking it. Who knows why I stuck it away.

Jewelry-making is not my main creative outlet. Painting and drawing is. So, making jewelry is something different for me. I have to concentrate on what I am doing, the techniques, etc. I have never truly felt at one with jewelry-making as I do when painting with watercolor.

Maybe that is why I was drawn to finishing that bracelet. It was somewhat foreign to me.  I became involved with something three dimensional, feeling the actual texture, using a more tactile form of creativity.

The bracelet just needed a few more charms to give it a finished look. So, I looked through all my supplies and started adding to the bracelet. I wanted the bracelet to have an eclectic feel and to be colorful, feminine, and fun. After finishing the bracelet I wore it to a barbeque and got many positive comments.

I did something different.

Spending a small amount of time making jewelry gave me a great amount of  pleasure. I feel that exploring other media can inspire you to reach new and better outlets for your creativity. Today think about doing something different creatively. You might be surprised at the outcome.

Holy God,

Thank you for all the creative avenues that are available. Today help us to find a form of creativity which will inspire us to greater heights. Bless us as we work to glorify you. We love you and appreciate all you do for us. In Christ’s name. Amen.
