Creativity Devotional – Combining the Poetic and the Mysterious

northside1

A garden must combine the poetic and the mysterious with a feeling of serenity and joy.
Luis Barragan

Thought:

I was looking for quotes about serenity and found the one above. I thought this quote was interesting because I could relate it to many different aspects of creativity.

According to Wikipedia, Luis Barragan is considered the most important Mexican architect of the 20th century.  He ventured into landscape and furniture design also.  I thought Barragan’s quote could be written as a fill in the blank.  You could say,

“A _____________  must combine the poetic and the mysterious with a feeling of serenity and joy.”

Put whatever interests you in the blank.  The quote could read, “A painting must combine the poetic and the mysterious with a feeling of serenity and joy.” Place sketch, musical composition, short story, sculpture, or whatever you like in the blank.

How do we create something that is poetic and serene?  Prayer is a good place to start when beginning a creative work. Say a prayer and give God a chance to be a part of the process.  Have faith the Holy Spirit will be there by your side adding mystery and serenity to your creation as well as your day.

Prayer:

God,

Today I ask for your presence as I work to create artwork. Help me to combine my knowledge of art with the mystery of the world and the poetry of nature. Let me reflect on my purpose for creating. Give me the ability to include a spirit of serenity and joy in my work.

In Christ’s name.  Amen.
