Creativity Devotional – Create For Love

waterfallThose who create for love – like the devotees who practice their spiritual tradition with ardor – give off a certain undefinable something that is attractive, and it attracts to them their good.

Julia Cameron, Walking in this World: The Practical Art of Creativity

I am reading Julia Cameron’s book Walking in this World. The quote above is out of the Week One reading. As I read I underline and circle statements that hit home. This statement made me think back on my life as an artist and how I got started. I fell in love with drawing and painting with watercolor. I filled all my spare time learning techniques and trying to understand the medium.

I pulled out photographs of things I loved to use as subject matter or I sat outside sketching and painting. I was excited about creating. It didn’t matter how good the work was. It was something I did for myself. I created for love.

Somewhere along the line I lost some of that excitement. I lost the joy in painting because I started taking on commissions, painting for shows, painting subject matter that I thought people would purchase. I know this happens to many artists. Getting caught up in the business of making art seems to squash the love and the creativity.

Today is as good a day as any to get that feeling back. If you are an artist that struggles with this problem, take a few hours to do something just for yourself. Start a new project just for your love of the medium. Let your favorite subject matter inspire your imagination. Or do an abstract to total free yourself of limits. Give yourself time to play around with a new technique. Do something totally off the wall.

I know that when I get into a project that I really love I lose all sense of time. I lose myself in the moment. Being in the “now” instead of the future is quite refreshing to the soul. Who knows what other benefits you will attract to your life. Have a great creative day filled with love.

Lord, Great Creator,

I humble myself in your presence. I praise Your Holy Name. I come to you today to ask your blessings on my creative practice. Refresh my soul. Replenish my spirit with joy and love as I take time to play and renew my creative spirit. I want to please you. Thy will be done in all things.

I ask this in Christ’s Name. Amen.
